Help wanted! Not you…
We hear this all the time. “I applied for an entry level role, but they wanted many years of experience!”
First of all – as a hiring manager – we would love to have that perfect candidate walk through the door. The one who already knows the culture. The one who already knows how to operate all of our customized tools. The one who understands the internal politics. Simply put, that just doesn’t exist.
What does exist is a labor force, fresh out of training – fresh out of trade-school – fresh out of college – fresh out of the armed forces.
I am of a generation that grew up without a cell phone – had a pager for my first business – knew what the big dish was in the back-yard and why it rotated… The folks coming up today in Cyber grew up with technology as a foundation of their childhood. Where I had a metal Tonka truck and endless hours of building forts – many of today’s young adults and adult workforce people grew up with a tablet, Minecraft, and many other “games” that helped build analytical and troubleshooting skills within the technical arena in which they are applying themselves.
So if you get a candidate and they’ve got a great attitude and want to learn how to be you at your business – they’re ACTUALLY the perfect candidate for the position. They probably know how to use a redstone circuit to build some pretty amazing features (and if you have to Google that, my point exactly!)
